Chevron Invests $1 Billion to Launch R&D Hub ENGINE in Bengaluru, India
Chevron, a global leader in energy solutions, is investing $1 billion to establish a new research and development hub in Bengaluru, India. The Chevron Engineering and Innovation Excellence Center (ENGINE), set to be located near Bellandur, will be the company’s largest engineering and innovation facility in India.
The ENGINE center will focus on recruiting around 600 specialized professionals by the end of 2025, with plans for further expansion in the future. This significant investment marks Chevron’s first major R&D initiative in India, joining its large technical centers in Houston and California, as well as smaller labs in Aberdeen.
Akshay Sahni, Chevron India’s incoming country head, described the establishment of ENGINE as a milestone in the company’s 145-year history. “This is an exciting time for the energy sector as we address the dual challenge of meeting rising energy demands while advancing towards a lower-carbon future. The talent at ENGINE will be pivotal in developing technology solutions for these challenges,” Sahni stated in a video interview with Business Standard.
Chevron ENGINE will focus on advancing operational reliability, low-carbon energy technologies, and subsurface geology for carbon storage. The center will recruit talent across various engineering disciplines, including mechanical, chemical, computer science, and electrical, as well as specialists in geology, geophysics, and environmental science.
Sahni highlighted that the $1 billion investment reflects not only Chevron’s financial commitment but also its intent to share global expertise. “We anticipate that this center will foster collaborative partnerships and generate scalable technology solutions right here in Bengaluru,” he said.
While Chevron plans to build its own capabilities in India, Sahni emphasized that the company will continue to value its relationships with third-party tech service providers. “Our long-standing collaborations with tech service companies have been instrumental in designing complex projects and operational facilities. We aim to enhance and build upon these partnerships,” he noted.
Chevron’s recent partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, involving the introduction of Chevron’s lubricant products, underscores its ongoing commitment to the Indian market. With operations spanning over 150 countries, Chevron remains a major player in the global oil and gas industry.
